In 1998, the asset sale of the Doctors Hospital system to OhioHealth provided an influx of funds into the renamed Osteopathic Heritage Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has approved over $267 million in funding awards to nearly 600 organizations, advancing a mission to improve health and quality of life in the community through education, research and service consistent with our osteopathic heritage. In recognition of this milestone, the Foundation’s 25 Years of Service and Impact Initiative provided support to organizations addressing critical health and human service needs in central and southeastern Ohio, investing $7.7 million in the community through Signature Impact Investments, regional Requests for Proposals, event sponsorships and other programs.
The Foundation’s Signature Impact Investments are designed to address pressing health and quality of life issues in the community by ensuring critical, high-quality services are available and accessible for a significant number of vulnerable residents. These funding awards are provided to organizations or initiatives with a history of high performance and impact, that effectively serve vulnerable populations and demonstrate a sustainable operational plan. Signature Impact Investments awarded as part of the 25 Years of Service and Impact initiative total over $4.2 million in support to the following organizations:
Central Ohio
Columbus State Community College
To support equipment upgrades and address financial barriers for students entering health science programs to increase the healthcare workforce in central Ohio.
St. Vincent Family Services
To support facility upgrades to enhance program capacity, decrease wait lists and improve the treatment experience of clients seeking same-day access to youth behavioral health services.
The Buckeye Ranch
To support new construction and renovations for the addition of Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility services to address gaps in the youth behavioral health continuum of care in central Ohio.
Southeastern Ohio
Nelsonville Community Foundation at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio
To partner with the Nelsonville Community Foundation to support initiatives benefitting Nelsonville and the surrounding communities of Buchtel, Carbon Hill and Murray City.
Stuart’s Opera House
To support expansion of the Arts Education Program and its affordable, accessible programming for Nelsonville and surrounding communities.
To commemorate 25 years as a private foundation, the Foundation released Requests for Proposals (RFP) to support central and southeastern Ohio organizations working to increase access to health-promoting services for vulnerable populations. Eligible projects and initiatives through the RFP aligned with two of the Foundation’s current funding priorities, Healthy Food Access and Behavioral Health and Substance Use Disorders. Funding was also considered for strategies focused on disease prevention, health promotion and improved health outcomes by addressing other social determinants of health. Over $2.4 million was approved for 15 organizations serving central and southeastern Ohio:
Central Ohio
Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Ohio
To support expansion of behavioral health services in central Ohio.
Communities In Schools of Ohio
To provide comprehensive support to improve student success in the South-Western City School District.
Community Housing Network
To support furnishings for a permanent supportive housing project serving adults 55 and older.
Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services
To support the Community Health Navigation Program, expanding outreach, education and health-promoting services to immigrant and refugee populations in Franklin County.
Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
To increase capacity of the Franklinton Family Service Center to serve more families, as part of the Furnish Our Community campaign.
Lower Lights Christian Health Center
To increase access to behavioral health and other health-related services for clients by embedding patient advocates within healthcare teams.
Lutheran Social Services
To provide nutrition education and diabetes management support to health center patients.
Mental Health America of Ohio
To expand organizational capacity to address increased demand in services through community outreach and support groups.
New Directions Career Center
To support the growth of workforce and career counseling programs, including expanded programming for clients 55 and older.
Physicians CareConnection
To improve the health of families living on Columbus’ Westside through interventions addressing food security, housing stability and healthcare access.
Southeastern Ohio
Athens Photographic Project
To expand access to art-based, peer support services to increase quality of life for individuals in Athens and Hocking counties experiencing behavioral health challenges.
Hopewell Health Centers
To establish an Extended Function Dental Auxiliary Program to serve the dental needs of individuals in Athens and Hocking counties.
Integrated Services for Behavioral Health
To add a Community Behavioral Health Worker to provide behavioral health and support services for youth and families at The Hive in Nelsonville.
John W. Clem Recovery House
To build staff capacity to further support residents in sustaining long-term recovery.
Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio
To help low-income individuals and families in Athens County maintain and access housing through legal representation.
