Stuart’s Opera House and Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Partner to Support Arts Education in Southeastern Ohio
Access to arts education helps students develop resilience, collaboration skills and self-esteem, all of which contribute to improved well-being and academic growth. In addition, youth engagement in the arts is recognized by researchers as having a positive impact on mental health, reducing stress and mitigating other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
Stuart’s Opera House, a historic venue and nonprofit arts education center in Nelsonville, Ohio, plays a pivotal role in supporting youth and families in the region through its diverse arts programs, all of which are tuition-free. Each year, Stuart’s Opera House serves over 2,600 youth, including students in the Nelsonville-York City Schools district, greatly expanding their access to arts education opportunities.
Located on Nelsonville’s Public Square, Stuart’s Opera House is an anchor institution and integral part of the community. The Foundation’s partnership with Stuart’s represents more than financial support—it is a commitment to strengthening the Nelsonville community by investing in arts education, which plays a crucial role in building resilience and a sense of belonging, particularly in underserved areas.

Advancing community health is central to the mission of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation. Understanding the importance of fostering educational opportunity and economic development in southeastern Ohio, the Foundation recently announced a historic $1 million investment in Stuart’s Opera House, reflecting alignment in the missions of both organizations to improve quality of life in the region.
Support from the Foundation will enable Stuart’s Opera House to expand program offerings for students and community residents, increase the number of youth served and invest in new equipment and technology to enhance programs in music, theater, visual arts and dance. The investment will also support strategic planning efforts, ensuring Stuart’s Opera House can continue to grow and serve as a cultural and educational cornerstone in the community, providing enriching experiences for children and families, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
To honor the 145th anniversary of Stuart’s Opera House, $145,000 from the Foundation’s investment will be committed as matching funds to support a broader campaign to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization’s educational programs.
Previous Foundation support for Stuart’s Opera House includes $500,000 as part of the Next Stage Campaign in 2013, which provided capital funding to develop new educational programming space and renovate the backstage, theater and rehearsal areas. Through this funding, Stuart’s Opera House was able to nearly double the number of students served through offerings including an after-school music program, audio-production program, summer camps focused on theater and music, a national poetry competition, private music lessons and serving as home to the Nelsonville-York High School Drama Club and its productions, all at no cost to participating youth.
The partnership between Stuart’s Opera House and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation represents a bold investment in the future of arts education in southeastern Ohio. This collaboration and support from the Foundation is a testament to the power of the arts in transforming lives and fostering healthier, more vibrant communities.
